The HPV vaccine protects girls from getting cervical cancer when they are adults.
Recommendations for HPV immunisation:
• All girls 12 years of age should receive the vaccine
• It may be given to girls aged 9-12 years in accordance with the
vaccine licence and at the discretion of the physician
• Females aged 13-26 years who would not have had the
opportunity to receive the vaccine at age 12 may also be given
Currently HPV vaccination is offered, free through a government program, to all girls going into 1st and 2nd year at secondary school.This service can be accessed through the school.
For girls outside this group, HPV vaccination can be obtained at our surgery.
There are currently two HPV vaccines available in Ireland. Both vaccination schedules consist of three vaccines spread over a six month period.
